Destination: Woodbury staff sat down with Amber Bisek, co-owner of Board & Brush Woodbury, to talk about how she and her husband got into owning a small business, what the business means to her and how guests can book a private event or sign up for a workshop at their studio.

Located on Eagle Creek Lane, Board & Brush Woodbury offers more than DIY wood sign workshops — it delivers a creative escape rooted in community.

Owned by Patrick and Amber Bisek, the studio is part of a nationwide franchise with more than 200 locations, including four in Minnesota. The Woodbury studio first opened in July 2018, and the Biseks took over in February 2023 after purchasing it from the previous owner.

“It was a spur-of-the-moment decision, and the opportunity to run a small business fell into our lap,” Bisek says. “We get strong community support from not only Woodbury, but from Cottage Grove and the surrounding area. The inspiration was to bring community and fun to the neighborhood.”

Despite having no prior background in art or small business ownership, the couple leaned into the opportunity.

“While we didn’t know much about the art industry or owning a small business, we educated ourselves, believed in what we were doing and relied on help from our staff.”

Today, the studio hosts a wide range of public and private workshops, from team-building events and fundraisers to bachelorette parties and kids celebrations. One memorable moment? A local cheer team rented the space for a glitter project before returning for a team-building workshop — a creative collaboration that went beyond the usual format.

For private events, the process is simple. Groups pre-register for a 2.5 – 3 hour workshop, select a date and time and plan for a BYOB (Bring Your Own Beverage) experience. Once participants arrive, an instructor guides them step-by-step, ensuring everyone feels comfortable.

The studio’s DIY approach empowers guests to choose their own stencil, stain and colors, creating a piece that reflects their personal style. No art experience required — just a willingness to try something new.

“Board & Brush is a perfect place to unwind and forget about outside responsibilities for a few hours. It’s a great way to recharge, refocus and support your mental well-being,” Bisek says.

Reflecting on owning a small business in Woodbury, Amber shares what it means to her. “I did it for fueling the fire and building a sense of community, belonging and giving back,” she says. “I feel like we’re accomplishing that.” Learn more about Board & Brush Woodbury at boardandbrush.com/woodbury
